‘Will vote against Budget’

Mahajana Eksath Peramuna Leader Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena yesterday said the Joint Opposition has decided to vote against the Budget and not vote against the President’s expenditure head.

Speaking at a media conference at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute yesterday, the MEP Leader said the defeat of the President’s expenditure head will create a crisis in the country, since there are important expenses under it.

“But there is no positive reason to vote in favour of the Budget,” he said.

He said the UNP has no majority in Parliament and they cannot defeat the President’s expenditure head.

Speaking about the ongoing 40th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, the MEP Leader questioned why the government of Sri Lanka does not use documentary evidence from British sources to say that the UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka is wrong and is based on incorrect facts.

MP Gunawardena said Sri Lanka kept silent and became a party to the resolution. “That is a major mistake by our country. Sri Lanka became a party to the resolution against Sri Lanka which has never happened before. We should withdraw that by claiming that we have the necessary laws and courts. So if there have been human rights violations, we can handle the cases. Fundamental rights are very strong in our country under the Constitution. No one is deprived of their fundamental rights. All Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims have equal rights before the Supreme Court,” he said.
