Higher guaranteed price for paddy

Measures will be taken to increase the guaranteed purchase price of paddy from the Yala season, Agriculture Minister P. Harrison said.

Accordingly, the price of a kilo of Samba will be increased from Rs. 41 to Rs. 43 and the price of a kilo of Nadu will be increased from Rs. 38 to Rs. 40, said the minister.

He was participating in the Western Province Govi Abhiman Awards Ceremony, recently.

Minister Harrison said the government, however, has implemented a mechanism to limit the increase of the price of rice with the increase of the paddy purchasing price.

He said a Cabinet paper has been submitted to declare the maximum retail price for rice. Accordingly, the maximum retail price of one kilo of Nadu would be Rs. 80 and one kilo of Samba would be Rs. 85, with effect from April 1.

“As a minister coming from a farmer family, I believe that one kilo of Nadu should be Rs. 40 and will take measures to keep to that price,” the minister said.
