PS member among illegal immigrants nabbed by Navy

Police sources said that a Pradeshiya Sabha member was also among the illegal Sri Lankan immigrants who were bound for New Zealand on board a fishing trawler which was intercepted by the Sri Lanka Navy in the southern seas off Galle on Thursday morning.

Police investigations started after the Navy handed over these illegal immigrants to the Galle Harbour Police on Thursday evening. Preliminary investigations also revealed that three Army personnel and two former airmen were among them.

They were residents of the Galle, Puttalam, Kandy, Ratnapura and Gampaha districts. A group of persons from the Galle district who had left from the Dodanguwa Fisheries Harbour in a small boat had also joined the group at mid sea.

Naval personnel attached to Fast Attack Craft (FACs) belonging to the Southern Naval Command,intercepted a suspicious trawler plying the southern seas about 80 nautical miles off the Galle Lighthouse.

Naval personnel held 30 illegal immigrants who are all males and handed them over to the Galle Harbour Police after a medical examination and preliminary naval investigation.
