Compensation for FAW

Distribution of compensation for farmers affected by the Fall Armyworm (FAW or Sena caterpillar) infestation commenced yesterday, beginning with the Ampara district.

The ceremony was held at the Ampara District Secretariat auditorium.

According to the statistics of the Agriculture Ministry, approximately 12,000 hectares of paddy as well as other crops were destroyed due to the infestation of the Sena caterpillar and the affected farmers will receive compensation of Rs. 40,000 per acre. The government has already allocated Rs. 250 million for this purpose and the compensation will be distributed by the Agricultural Insurance Board, under the guidance of Agriculture Minister P. Harrison.

Under the first phase of the programme, compensation will be paid to 307 farmers who lost 100 percent of their crops in the Ampara District. Under this phase, compensation will be paid for 167 hectares of damaged crops.

The Agriculture Department has prepared reports on the destroyed crops in the Anuradhapura, Ampara, Moneragala, Kurunegala, Trincomalee and Jaffna districts and farmers in the worst-affected districts, Ampara, Moneragala and Anuradhapura, will receive compensation under the first phase of the programme.
