Trinity College captain Pubudu Bandara was the victim of over-enthusiastic supporters during the 103rd cricket encounter against St Anthony’s College that resulted in him ending up at the Kandy General Hospital on Saturday.
Bandara who had injured his right arm attempting to stop a ball off his own bowling during the Antonian first innings on Friday was in considerable pain. School authorities stated that a doctor who attended to his injury had confirmed that he had damaged tissues in his right shoulder. Bandara did not bat in his usual position at the top of the order but came to bat at the fall of the eighth wicket. He contributed a plucky 60 off 99 balls (8 fours, 2 sixes) and carried Trinity from 132-9 to 173 in reply to Antonians first innings of 298-9 declared before being last out. In the process the former S Thomas’ College Matale cricketer also passed 1000 runs for the season.
However, when Bandara was returning to the pavilion he was mobbed by supporters from both schools that resulted in his injury being aggravated further. He was later admitted to the Kandy General Hospital emergency ward and given treatment. He was discharged on Sunday.
Trinity College authorities stated that Bandara’s injury was the cause of over-enthusiastic supporters mobbing him and not due to any untoward incident.
They also stated that Bandara would be admitted to Durdan’s Hospital in Colombo today for a further check up on his injury.
