The Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City, a part of the Rotary District Sri Lanka, has a history spanning 33 years. With the club’s commitment to promoting an environment where gender diversity is respected and celebrated, the Club has over the years, strived in engaging and increasing their women membership. The club has also offered leadership positions to their female members that had resulted in having six lady presidents that had led the club over the last 12 years.

This year, the club has succeeded in recording a ratio of 40% of the membership being female.

The female membership comes from diverse professions that range from insurance, travel and tourism, advertising, law, beauty culture, garments, fashion design and public relations.

Over the last 12 years, under the leadership of each of the female presidents, the club has carried out a variety of community projects that comprise of English education for underprivileged children, providing water and sanitation to villages, building schools, provision of educational material and shoes for poor schools, drug awareness programs for youth and training youth in facing job interviews and leadership skills.

District Governor for Sri Lanka, Dushan Soza stated, “Through Rotary, I’ve had the opportunity to have got to know many female leaders and the very influential roles they are engaged in the Rotary. I think it’s quite amazing. Their ability to have taken on many projects and deliver results, their engagement when committed, the diversity they bring to any forum are all proven success factors. The Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City is a prime example of this fact and I am happy to note that 40 % of the club comprises of the female gender. This club is very active and sets the benchmark for other clubs to follow.

The Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City chartered in 1987, continue to embrace in giving leadership opportunities to its lady members and will be having a female president at the helm for the next Rotary year 2019-2020.
