Military honours for retired Kopay soldier

Ceremonially-attired troops of the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna, presenting military honours, saluted the remains of Corporal (retd) S.S Sabharathnam of Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC), at his funeral at the Kopay general cemetery on Friday.

The remains were brought in military procession for the burial.

Having joined the Army on July 9, 1958, Corporal Sabharathnam completed 22 years of dedicated service to the nation and retired in 1981.

He served the 1 SLAC after enlistment and earned several medals, including the Long Service medal, President’s accession medal, 25th anniversary medal, and the SLAC long service medal, while in the Army.

A gun salute honoured him after his medals and decorations were symbolically handed over to his next of kin by 51 Division General Officer Commanding Major General Roshan Seneviratne, in accordance with military traditions, after the citation in the 1st Reconnaissance Regiment Sri Lanka Armoured Corps Special Part-I Order was read out to the gathering. Corporal Sabharathnam, who resided in Kopay Central during his retirement, died on March 4.
