Water project at a standstill: kidney patients suffering

Residents in Vilgamuwa said kidney patients living in areas from Vilgamuwa to Polonnaruwa are affected as the Heenganga Kidney Disease Prevention Drinking Water Project had been stalled halfway.

Residents said the drinking water project initiated at Heengaga River in Vilgamuwa, Matale has served the residents as no one consuming water from Heenganga is affected with kidney disease so far.

They said the project was initiated to provide drinking water to Vilgamuwa, where more than 3,000 kidney patients are reported to be living, as well as to villages in Polonnaruwa.

Residents added that seven tanks were constructed while pipes were laid in many areas before the construction was stalled. They said there is only one security guard to protect the construction site. They also said the others employed in the project are not being paid.

Residents request authorities and President Maithripala Sirisena to address this issue soon.
