French aid for rural fresh milk promotion

Six small-scale milk processing centres are to be developed with French aid, concurrently with the local fresh (liquid) milk propagation programme of the Agriculture, Rural Economic Development, Livestock, Irrigation, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry.

An agreement in this connection with the French government was signed at the Agriculture Ministry on February 27, the Government Information Department said in a statement issued yesterday.

Ministry Secretary K.D.S. Ruwanchandra signed the agreement on behalf of the Ministry, while Bocard Institute Business division chief Philipe Marie signed on behalf of the French government.

The statement said the six selected milk processing centres under this programme are Kaduwela Hewagamkorale West Muliti-Purpose Cooperative Society, Attanagalla Milk Processors’ Cooperative Society, Polonnaruwa district Milk Processors’ Cooperative Society, Batticlaoa Eluwan Agricultural Products Organisation, Wariyapola Small-Scale Dairy Development Foundation and Wennappuwa Succeed International (Private) Ltd.

This project plans to provide milk-processing machines worth Rs. 100 million to each beneficiary. The government will bear 50 percent of the cost, and the beneficiary would have to pay the lending bank the other half, subject to a concessionary period of five years.

These centres would popularise the consumption of fresh milk to improve the nutrition standard of children and adults.

Steps would also be taken to join hands with the government’s programme to supply a glass of milk to each schoolchild.
