Over 150 centres to buy paddy - PMB Chairman

The Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) has set up 157 purchasing centres in eighteen administrative districts countrywide to purchase paddy from farmers during the 2018/19 Maha harvesting season, PMB Chairman Kasthuri Anuradhanayake told the Daily News in Kurunegala on Sunday.

He said that 53 more purchasing centres would be set up countrywide after considering the sale of paddy. Nearly 6,163 metric tonnes of paddy have been purchased from farmers.

The majority of purchasing centres have been opened in the Polonnaruwa district which is 27. Rs. 237 million have been paid to farmers for their paddy by the PMB.

‘In Anuradhapura, about 26 purchasing cenres have been opened. The PMB has also opened about 15 paddy purchasing centres in the Kurunegala and Hambantota districts, he said. Each centre is buying a Samba and Nadu one kilogramme at Rs.48 and Rs. 38, the PMB Chairman said.

Meanwhile, Kurunegala District Senior Divisional Secretary W. E. Jayathilake told the Daily News that many private businessmen purchase paddy from farmers at low rates and the lapses in the PMB in purchasing paddy from farmers have reduced sales of the PMB.
