RI, fine for possessing heroin

A van driver who pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing and trafficking nearly one gramme of heroin was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment(RI) by Kurunegala High Court Judge Menaka Wijesundara recently. He was fined Rs. 50,000 in default of another one-year imprisonment.

Senior State Counsel Charaka Dharmasiri told court that the Police found heroin when his van was searched and he did not have previous offences.

Meanwhile, a 43-year-old woman, a resident of Gokarella who pleaded guilty to possessing 73 packets of heroin was sentenced to two years’ RI suspended for one year and was fined Rs. 20,000. State Counsel Charaka Dharmasiri prosecuted.
