Ashoka celebrates youth cooperation with SL

The Russian Centre in Colombo hosted an event celebrating youth cooperation between Russia and Sri Lanka, on Monday.

The highlight of the event was the felicitation ceremony and presentation of medals and diplomas signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin to members of the National Preparatory Committee (NPC) of Sri Lanka for the XIX Festival of Youth and Students held in the Russian city of Sochi in 2017.

In 2017, the Russian Centre in Colombo hosted the launch meeting of the NPC of Sri Lanka for the XIX World Festival of Youth and Students presided over by then Agriculture Minister Duminda Dissanayake.

Colombo also hosted the Third International Preparatory Meeting of the World Festival of Youth and Students, welcoming representatives of 47 countries from all over the world.

Medals and diplomas for contribution by way of organising the XIX Festival of Youth and Students in Sochi were presented by Russian Ambassador Yuri Materiy to State National Policies, Economic Affairs Minister Niroshan Perera, SLFP National Organiser Duminda Dissanayake (MP), Co-president NPC Sri Lanka for 19th WFYS 2017 and JVP Central Committee Member Dr. Nalinda Jayathissa (MP), Communist Youth Federation International Affairs Secretary and Sri Lanka National Union of Students President Thamara Dhananjaya Gunarathna, former Vice President of World Federation of Democratic Youth and National Committee Member of Socialist Youth Union, Pubudu Nuwan Samaraweera.

The Russian city of Krasnoyarsk hosted the XXIX Winter Universiade 2019 - the largest international student and youth sports competition, with over 50 countries participating, from March 2-12.

The 2019 Winter Universiade is the third Universiade hosted in Russia. The first Universiade, when Russia was a Soviet Republic, was hosted by Moscow in 1973, while Kazan hosted the 2013 Summer Universiade.
