Hospital X-ray unit remains idle

The X-ray unit of the Hingurakgoda District Hospital has been closed since the day it was opened nine months ago. Patients said that though it was constructed at a high cost, it has been a white elephant due to the authorities’ negligence.

They said that the X-ray unit of the hospital was opened by President Maithripala Sirisena on August 1, 2018; but still, patients required to obtain X-rays were being sent to the Medirigiriya Base Hospital (15 to 20 kilometres away) or the Polonnaruwa General Hospital.

Queried by the Hingurakgoda District Hospital, District Medical Officer Dr. Jagath Wimalaratne said that the amount of electricity that has been provided to the X-ray Unit was insufficient to operate the machines in the unit. Due to this, the X-ray unit of the hospital had to be closed. He added that the matter has been brought to the attention of higher-ranking officers.

Polonnaruwa Regional Director of Health Services Dr. D.S.A. Jayasinghe said that the reason for the closure of the X-ray unit of the Hingurakgoda Hospital was because they had a shortage of technical officers to operate the machines.
