Kandy traffic plan suspended

The Kandy Municipal Council unanimously decided to suspend the new traffic plan which was in force in the Kandy City limits yesterday.

The Kandy Mayor yesterday convened a special meeting to take a decision with regard to new traffic plan on the request of over 21 members of the council.

The Municipal Councillors had requested the Mayor to immediately convene a special meeting of the council after taking into account of the stiff opposition towards the new traffic plan.

Kandy Mayor Kesara Senanayake informed the Central Province DIG about the unanimous decision of the council to suspend the new traffic plan.

The new traffic plan was implemented on the directive of Central Province Governor Maithri Gunaratne after having discussion with a number of institutions including the Police.

A 12 member committee was appointed by the Council to study the heavy traffic congestion prevailing in the city and report to the council.

This committee includes members from the ruling and opposition parties.
