Kanjipani Imran’s henchman Jee Bumma arrested in Gampola

The Police Special Task Force yesterday arrested Jee Bumma, the suspect wanted in several drug and gang rivalry-related Colombo shootings.

He was wanted for several attempted murder charges, including the February 4 shooting of Kudu Chooti at Maithree Bodhiraja Avenue in Kotahena.

Police arrested the suspect, Mohammad Zamoor Mohammad Shiyam alias Jee Bumma (38), in the Gampolawela area in Gampola, where he was hiding. Shiyam is a resident of Maligawatte, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said.

He is said to be an accomplice of underworld figure Kanjipani Imran, who was recently arrested with Makandura Madush in Dubai.

Jee Bumma was wanted for attempted murder in connection with allegedly opening fire at Anton Michael Nishanthan Croos on January 20 in Jinthupitiya, and a similar incident on January 1 in the Kotahena Jampettah Street area in which he had fired shots at Chandana Aarchchige Malcolm Perera, police said. Police said the shooting incidents are connected to drugs and underworld rivalry. Investigations have revealed that Shiyam was carrying out criminal operations for Kanjipani Imran.

Kudu Chooti or Asha Fari, aged 39, who the suspect allegedly attempted to kill last month, was the mistress of Kanjipani Imran, police said.

The suspect is identified as an organised criminal and has a prior criminal record. He has served jail terms previously for illegal possession of firearms and attempted murder, said SP Gunasekera.
