‘Hit and run accident, a black mark on country’

The hit and run accident in Bambalapitiya where Borella Traffic OIC IP Ananda Sagara Sarathchandra was killed is a black mark on the country, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

The Prime Minister told Parliament yesterday that the first vehicle knocked down the Traffic OIC and the second vehicle sped past without helping the victim or reporting the scene, adding that both acts can be counted as ‘crimes’.

“Let the law take its course. A UNP Colombo Municipal Councillor had also been there, but we never tried to defend him. I also did not try to put the blame on anybody.

MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage was in the Police because his son was involved. We can understand his situation. The law will apply irrespective of the status of those involved,” he said.

The PM, while noting that he never summoned the Attorney General to Temple Trees and inquired from him as to whom he would file cases and to whom he would not, said that he cannot help the mentality of those who did so.

The Prime Minister made the above observations in reply to UPFA MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage who accused the PM claiming that the PM instructed that his son be taken into custody. MP Aluthgamage also said that arresting those who travelled in the second vehicle with regard to the accident was not fair.

“The UNP CMC Councillor was also there. Nobody is talking about him. Instead, the PM wants to take me into custody,” MP Aluthgamage said.
