Jayatilleke de Silva commemorated

The Sri Lanka Committee for the Solidarity with Palestine and the Sri Lanka Journalists for Global Justice (SLGJ)jointly organised a commemoration of the late Jayatilleke de Silva, former Daily News and Sunday Observer Editor-in-Chief and social activist in Colombo, recently.

Minister Imtiaz Bakeer Markar, Communist Party Leader D. E. W. Gunasekera, Editors' Guild of Sri Lanka President and Daily Lankadeepa Editor Siri Ranasinghe, Palestine Ambassador Dr. Zuhair Mohamed Hamdallah Zaid, JVP MP Bimal Rathnayake and Mahinda Hattaka SLGJ Chairman were present.

They honoured the life and works of the late Jayatilleke de Silva and his contribution towards addressing social justice issues, including his commitment to the Palestinian cause.

Senior journalists Daya Lankapura and N. M. Ameen, and Palestine Ambassador presented a memento to Mrs. Jayatilleke de Silva and the family.

Communist Party Leader D. E. W Gunasekera said the later Jayatilleke de Silva, born in Ambalangoda, studied at Dharmasoka College and later at Ananda College, Colombo, and graduated from the University of Colombo to join the teaching profession. He was a Principal when he left the teaching profession to join the Communist Party.

He later joined Aththa newspaper of the Communist Party. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Daily News and also Chief Editor of the Sunday Observer. He translated Karl Marx's ‘Das Kapital’ into Sinhala.

Palestine Ambassador said he translated many books and articles regarding Palestinian issues in Sinhala and that his demise is an irreparable loss.
