Illegal lunch sheet factory raided

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) conducted a raid on a lunch sheet factory in Rathnarama Road, Hokandara, in Kaduwela, jointly with the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) and the Police Special Unit of the CEA on Thursday.

When the raid was conducted, the factory was in operation and lunch sheets were being manufactured using HDPE, LDPE materials and calcium.

Five extruder machines, six cutting machines and two mixtures were being used for the production process. It was revealed that this factory does not have any approvals, including the Environmental Protection License (EPL), Business Registration and Trade License. It has violated the National Environmental Act as it manufactures HDPE lunch sheets in contrary to Regulation No. 2034/34 of 2017 09.01.

The CEA will pursue legal action against the accused at the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Courts.

A stock of two tons of lunch sheets worth nearly Rs. two million was seized by the CAA.

The accused said the products are sold in Petttah market.
