A consultant surgeon, attached to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, who had caused injury to a nurse by attacking her with a surgical item, had settled the matter by agreeing to pay Rs. 100,000 to the victim.
It is alleged that the Surgeon had attacked the nurse while an operation was ongoing at the operations theatre, on Wednesday.
The nurse, seriously injured, is being treated at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
The nursing staff commenced a strike over this on Wednesday.
Kurunegala Police said the Consultant Surgeon, after being taken into custody, had agreed to pay Rs. 100,000 as compensation to the nurse and was released on police bail.
However, nurses at the hospital carried out a demonstration on Thursday in front of the hospital demanding health authorities to take steps to transfer the Consultant Surgeon as he had misbehaved in hospital on several previous occasions too.
Kurunegala Police are investigating.
