WP Governor condemns New Zealand mosque attacks

National Unity Alliance (NUA) Leader and Western Province Governor M. Azath S. Salley said he was shocked and dismayed over the brutal massacre of worshippers at the Christchurch Mosque in New Zealand on Friday.

The Governor said he was deeply saddened that the shooting incident which resulted in 50 more worshippers wounded and over 40 injuries.

“The victims are from more than 13 countries throughout the globe,” he added.

While condemning the atrocious killing by a racist terrorist, Salley said that he sincerely hoped that the New Zealand government takes appropriate action not only to punish all those who are involved in the murder but also it should take all measures to avoid such recurrences and provide the people with safety, security and confidence to live as peaceful people where democratic values are respected and cherished.

“On behalf of the Muslims of Sri Lanka, may I take this opportunity to convey our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families in New Zealand and in other parts of the globe. We pray that the Almighty Allah should give them the courage, confidence and faith in Allah to continue their life peacefully in the future,” the Governor said.

The Governor also registered his grateful thanks to New Zealand Premier Jacinda Ardern, who lost no time in taking quick action in the wake of the terror attacks on two mosques on Friday. She cancelled all programmes, held press conference, addressed the community and nation, ordered three days of official mourning and lowered the country’s Flag at half-mast.

Salley said she called it a terrorist attack and ensured the safety of community and all mosques. “ She had also visited the victims of families not as a PM but a family member,dressed up like a Muslim, breaking all security protocol, greeted salams and hugging the bereaved, cried with them and spoke to them as her own.”

Governor Salley while praising the New Zealand Prime Minister’s magnanimous gesture said such reactions from the premier contributed a great deal to consoling not only the families of the deceased but the entire Muslim population in the world which stands disturbed and distressed over this incident.

“We lift our hands in prayers to Allah the Almighty, that these martyrs should be given the best place in Jannah and He should bless their families for a peaceful life in this world,” Governor Salley’s message adds.
