Borella Traffic OIC’s death: Suspect granted bail

The driver of the Defender vehicle, Navindu Umesh Ratnayake who was arrested over the hit and run accident that killed Borella Traffic OIC, IP Sarathchandra was yesterday released on bail by Colombo Additional Magistrate Shalini Perera.

The suspect was ordered to be released on two sureties of Rs.500,000. Superintendent of Police Chandana Kodithuwakku appearing on behalf of the Police informed court that the Attorney General has given instructions to file indictments against the suspects in the High Courts over committing offences under Section 298 of the Penal Code.

Bambalapitiya Police had earlier arrested eight persons including a son of MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage and a female in connection with the hit-and-run accident. They are currently out on bail. Four suspects were passengers in the Defender vehicle and the other three suspects were the driver and the passengers of the Prado vehicle that followed the Defender. The Police also seized the Defender vehicle. Attorney-at-Law Ajith Pathirana appearing on behalf of Navindu Umesh informed court that the parents of the suspect are ready to pay a fair compensation to the victim’s family.

The Additional Magistrate ordered all the suspects to appear before court on the next calling date on April 22.
