Speedy import of paediatric heart surgery equipment

Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has directed that all equipment required for paediatric heart surgery be speedily imported, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

He said the machines and nitric oxide cylinders required for such surgeries at Lady Ridgeway (LRH) and 16 other hospitals will be imported shortly, under the instructions of Minister Dr. Senaratne.

Pediatricians recently met Minister Dr. Senaratne at the Health Ministry and informed him that there are about 1,000 children on the waiting lists for heart surgeries and nitric oxide is required to control lung failure in such children, he said.

One machine has already been installed at LRH and daily about six heart surgeries are performed there at present, he said.
