Plans afoot to boost Kurunegala king coconut cultivation

The Kurunegala Coconut Cultivation Board (CCB) Office has taken steps to increase the cultivation of king coconuts in the district.

According to CCB District Manager Kapila Hettiarachchi, there is a big demand for king coconuts in the local and foreign markets.

The district manager said that under the development programme, king coconut saplings would be provided to farmers through agrarian service centres at a reasonable price. Instructions too, would be provided free of charge, he added.

He said that the demand for king coconuts had increased, yet its cultivation was dwindling as estates had been sold by land owners. He added that, if the selling of coconut lands was not controlled, the public would have to buy coconut as well as king coconuts at exorbitant prices.

Hettiarachchi added that a plan was afoot to curb the issue.

The district manager said that according to Ayurvedic physicians, king coconuts are a good source of carbohydrates, Vitamin E, Iron, Calcium and Phosphorous.

He added that king coconuts also have high amounts dietary fibre and notable amounts of protein and fat.

He also said that in Ayurvedic remedies, king coconuts have been prescribed to cure many ailments.
