Drunk officials transporting prisoners arrested

A jailor, sergeant and a prison guard were arrested for being under the influence of liquor while transporting a group of prisoners in a bus from Polonnaruwa to the Welikada Prison around 11 pm on March 31, Minneriya Police said. The bus was checked following a tip off received by the Polonnaruwa Senior SP. Police said the bus manned by seven prison officers including a jailor was transporting eight prisoners including a prisoner committed to the death penalty.

When the alcosense meter was used to check the threesome it recorded that they were nearly under the influence of liquor. The jailor had a reading of 160 ml of alcohol in a millilitre of blood, the sergeant had 147.4 ml of liquor while the guard had 38.4 ml of liquor.

However, when the threesome was produced before a doctor at the Hingurakgoda hospital he reported that they had not consumed liquor.

This contradictory report had caused a conflicting situation.

Attempts to contact the doctor concerned on the matter proved futile.

Minneriya police said the eight prisoners in the bus were handed over to the Superintendent of the Polonnaruwa prison and the three prison officers were released on police bail.

Police said they would further investigate into the incident and submit a report to Court.
