Basketball in Sri Lanka turns professional

The Sri Lanka Basketball Federation (SLBF) announced their latest venture in hosting of the first-ever professional basketball tournament where male teams get into via action by the franchise owners.

The tournament is set to kick-off from May 2 and matches will be played at two venues Air Force Indoor Stadium Thunmulla and Sugathadasa Stadium.

In over 100 years of Sri Lanka basketball history, it is the first time the sport is being upgraded to a professional level and players will be paid based on their performances. Players’ action night will be held in the second week of April.

Speaking at the press conference held at NOC yesterday, Chandana Liyanage vice president of the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation said, “We are proud to say that our committee has uplifted Sri Lanka basketball sports into the professional level.

Players will be financially paid by the franchise team owners and one million cash prize will be awarded to the winners.”

Liyanage further said that six teams will vie for honors namely Jaffna Crabs representing North region, Galle Express covering South, Kandy Kings, Batti Sunrise, Gampaha Jet and Colombo Warriors.

In the first round, 30 matches will be played at the Air Force indoor ground.

Mobitel will be the main sponsors for the tournament and corporate companies will be owning the franchise teams.
