Bail for Russian woman charged with assaulting cop

Panadura Chief Magistrate Amila Ariyasena on Tuesday granted bail to a Russian woman charged with obstructing and assaulting the police, on the night of March 30.

Personal bail was granted to the woman named Natalia on payment of Rs. 5,000 with a surety.

Police said the suspect was allegedly the mistress of a Sri Lankan, living in a house

in Waduramulla in the Panadura Police division.

Police Sergeant Lal Ananda of the Panadura South Police produced the suspect in court with a B report, on charges of obstructing policemen and assaulting one of the two policemen who had visited her house on the night of March 30, to inquire into her complaint to the Police Emergency Service 119.

The suspect had complained of noise from the loudspeakers used at a musical show held regularly at late night, close to her house.

Her lawyer M.D. Wijepala told court that his client was living down Waduramulla Road and she and her family were disturbed by the musical show till 2 am every night.

She had complained to the Police Emergency Service 119 and two men in khaki had visited her house. As it was dark, she asked for their identity cards. They had replied that they were police, over which an argument had ensued, and one of the policemen had allegedly assaulted her. The occupant of the house had admitted her to the Panadura Hospital. Her complaint regarding the police assault had not been entertained by the police. A doctor at the hospital found abrasions on her cheek.

To protect themselves, the Panadura South Police Crime Branch had arrested her and produced her in court on the charges that she had assaulted police and obstructed their duties in her house that night, the lawyer said.

The Chief Magistrate considered the submissions made by the police and the defence lawyer and granted personal bail to the suspect.

The Chief Magistrate directed the Panadura South Police to conduct an inquiry into the musical show held every night, allegedly without the permission of the police.

The case was postponed for June 22.
