SriLankan to present counter- proposal to Airbus - Group Legal Head

SriLankan Airlines (SLA) will present a counter-proposal with regard to the purchase of four A350-900 aircraft, due to be delivered in 2020 and 2021 under the airlines’ re-fleeting programme.

SLA's Group Legal Affairs Head Mayuka Ranasinghe told the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) on Irregularities at SriLankan Airlines, SriLankan Catering and Mihin Lanka that they have informed the Airbus Company of their decision of not purchasing these aircraft.

“We have suspended the pre-delivery payments for these aircraft from 2017 and are planning to purchase several aircraft”, he added. However, it was also revealed that the Airbus company had not agreed to cancel the deal and instead they have come up with an alternative plan, through which they have proposed to consider purchase of aircrafts such as A320s or A321s.

The national carrier had entered into the controversial Rs. 146.1 billion Airbus A350-900 agreement in 2013. SLA placed an order to purchase four A350-900 aircraft and obtain four more on lease through this agreement.

However, the leasing of four aircraft was cancelled in 2016 and the company was to obtain the other four planes during the 2020 and 2021 period.
