Bandaragama PS erupts over supermarket stall allocations

A heated argument erupted between the ruling and opposition members of the Bandaragama Pradeshiya Sabha over the allocation of stalls for traders at the newly constructed supermarket complex.

This brawl erupted at the Pradeshiya Sabha meeting at the Thalpitibedda library auditorium to discuss the allocation of stalls to the traders yesterday.

Twenty five traders who had stalls at the old market complex had been removed from their stalls promising them new stalls at the newly constructed supermarket complex. Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Devendra Perera submitted a proposal that these traders should be given stalls at this complex.

A heated argument erupted when Opposition leader Dharshana Peiris said that a person who had been living there for over 70 years should receive a shop at the complex. Members representing the ruling party objected to this proposal. Members began hurling verbal abuse at each other after chairman Devendra Perera stressed that decision over the allocation of a stall to this person in question should be taken at the next session as he has not a trader and he has no business registration certificate.

However the ruling party managed to adopted the proposal submitted by Chairman Devendra Perera with the majority votes
