Mega projects launched in Batticaloa on President’s instructions

The second stage of President Maithripala Sirisena's plan of action on ‘Rata Wenuwen Ekata Sitimu’ (Let us unite for the sake of the country), was launched yesterday and will continue until April 12 in Batticaloa, Batticaloa Government Agent M. Uthayakumar said.

He was speaking at a press briefing at the District Secretariat on Sunday. He said the first stage of the plan of action was launched in Puttalam last month.

Projects such as Gramashathi, Small Agriculture Assistance Project, National Programme on Food Production, National Environmental Conservation, National Drugs Prevention Programme, Chronic Diseases Prevention, Sustainable School Development, Save the Children, Person with Special Needs and Elders Empowerment and Mobile Service to obtain land, National Identity Cards and Passport, will be launched. A total of 197 projects are to be implemented in 14 Secretariat Divisions in Batticaloa while nearly 173,000 families will benefit, he said.

Central Government, Provincial Government, Local Government Departments, Financial Institutions and Non-Governmental Organisations are implementing these projects. President Maithripala Sirisena will participate on the final day at Weber Stadium, Batticaloa where he will hand over deeds to 100 families, nets and canoes to fishermen, Ranaviru houses, Launch Smart Sri Lanka, assistance to elderly and differently-abled.

Over 5,000 people are to be presented with coconut and cashew saplings.
