WP deploys more bus services for Avurudu

Special bus services catering to passengers’ requirement will be in operation for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season from April 9 – 21 in the Western Province, Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority (WP RPTA) Chairman Thusitha Kularatne said.

He said the bus services will be implemented under an integrated timetable in collaboration with the National Transport Commission (NTC) from five main bus terminals, including Bastian Mawatha in Pettah, Kaduwela, Awariwatte in Katunayake, Kadawatha and Panadura.

In addition, the regular bus services from 56 other terminals within the province have also been rescheduled to cater to the demand during the New Year season, he said.

Kularatne said nearly 6,200 buses will be in service during this period and 750 special buses will run from the five terminals with the support of the NTC.

These bus services are scheduled to cater to passengers leaving for their hometowns for the New Year season, he said.

According to the Chairman, the RPTA has taken steps to cancel the leave of all field officers of the Authority and also has cancelled the Special Tour licences of the buses during this period.

The buses which were originally not scheduled for this season have also been recalled to the fleet to cater to the additional demand, but no private buses with temporary permits will be in service, he said.

The Chairman also introduced the 24-hour hotline 0112 860 860 for passengers to be able to lodge complaints against buses which charge more than the stipulated fare and said immediate steps would be taken to solve these complaints.

Assuring a secure and passenger-friendly service throughout this period, Kularatne requested the public to use the public transportation system rather than private vehicles to ease possible traffic congestion during the festive season.
