Suspect living closeby held

A 39-year-old father of two who lives in a house about 300 metres away from the Pothukoladeniya Apalathotuwa Sri Vivekaramaya was taken into custody on suspicion by the Pindeniya Police in connection with the alleged murder of Viharadhipathi Ven. Rotuwe Chandrananda Thera.

The Thera was found dead in the temple with a head injury that seemed to have been caused by an assailant on April 7. Kegalle Magistrate Chamara Wickramanayake who held the inquest into the death at the temple premises on Monday, ordered the Pindeniya Police to conduct further investigations at the Kegalle General Hospital.

Hospital JMO Dr. Prabhath Senasinghe who held the postmortem examination concluded that he had died due to an injury to the head with a sharp implement. Thereafter, the body was handed over to dayakas who took it to the temple in a sealed coffin, as the body was heavily decomposed.

The cremation was held at the Viharaya’s adahana maluwa on April 9.

The Pindeniya Police are conducting further investigations under the directions of OIC Chief Inspector Jayantha Dharmakeerthi and the supervision of Kegalle SP Chamika Premasiri and Pindeniya ASP Jayantha Athukorale.
