Rains expected during Avurudu season even with heat - Met Department

Temperature to abate from June :

Meteorology Department officials yesterday forecast evening rains for most parts of the island during the New Year, but cautioned against the continuous heat.

“We expect rains in most parts of the country in the evenings, “a weather forecaster said, “There will be thunder showers in the island on April 13, 14 and 15, but the heat is going to persist making things more uncomfortable.”

The temperature is expected to rise to “Extreme Caution,” which will be between 32 to 41 degrees Celsius (C) especially for the North-Western and North-Central Provinces and the Mannar, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Gampaha districts.

“So stay hydrated and be in the shade as much as you can to preserve your ability to deal with heat at all times,” the Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine advises the public.

“People do not feel comfortable when the air temperature is between 20°C and 27°C. When the air temperature is higher than that the people will feel uncomfortable,” Met. Department sources said.

“The air temperature recorded from most parts of the country has been above 32 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature or heat index yesterday was recorded from Vavuniya: 38.5 degrees Celsius,” said Meteorology Department sources.

We asked Met Department officials when the country can expect the weather to cool down.

“One can expect the current feel-like heat to cool down by the end of this month or within the first week of June with the run of the North-Western monsoons to come,” they said.
