Bhikkhu urges authorities to take stern action

Chief Incumbent of the Veherabendihinna temple in Pathkolagolla, Galewela, Ven. Arampola Sugathawansa Thera, recently requested the authorities to take action to protect the temple premises abound with white sandalwood trees and artifacts.

According to the thera, a large number of white sandalwood trees had been felled and stolen by thieves. There are nearly 300 white sandalwood trees in the temple premises.

Excavations are also being carried out by the Archaeological Department at the temple and the ruins of an ancient stupa and stone pillars have been unearthed as well.

“It is ten years since I came to this temple. I could not erect a protective fence around the land which, is 25 acres in extent, due to financial difficulties,” the thera said. “I have brought this matter to the notice of the authorities on several occasions, but no action has yet been taken,” he added.
