‘Corruption, apathy hindering development’

President Maithripala Sirisena said fraud and corruption and the failure of people’s representatives to fulfill their responsibilities are among the main causes for the obstruction of the country's development.

Whatever they say during election campaigns, some people’s representatives are not concerned about attending Parliament sessions or participating in Local Government and Provincial Council meetings, and as a result, they cannot understand the problems of the people of the country, the President said.

He was speaking at the vesting of a new building at the Polonnaruwa Municipal Council, with the public, on Wednesday.

The President said even though politicians campaign on party platforms during elections, after they are elected, it is their responsibility to commit themselves to serve the people with unity.

President Sirisena also noted that mayors and Pradeshiya Sabha chairmen have been vested with executive powers, and the Local Government sector is an area where opportunities for development are limitless. Local government authorities have the opportunity of implementing development projects in any field for the benefit of the public, according to the Local Government Act.

This new building was constructed at a cost of Rs. 190 million under the Pibidemu Polonnaruwa (Awakening of Polonnaruwa) District Development Project.

Minister Vajira Abeywardena, Parliamentarian Wasantha Senanayake, North Central Province Governor Sarath Ekanayake, North Western Province Governor Peshala Jayaratne, Polonnaruwa Mayor Chanaka Sidath Ranasinghe and others were also present.

The newly built Women and Child Abuse Prevention Unit at the Polonnaruwa Police Station was also opened by the President. The President planted a sapling at the premises of the police station. Senior Police officers including IGP Pujith Jayasundara were present.

The Kaduruwela new bus halt, built at a cost of Rs. 50.1 million under the Pibidemu Polonnaruwa programme was also opened by the President.
