Students encouraged to practice avurudu traditions

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has informed all school heads countrywide, in a circular, that all teachers and parents should encourage their students to practice avurudu traditions, recently.

He had stated that students should know the country’s cultural heritage, as well as the traditions and customs followed during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The minister had requested teachers and parents to get students to participate in traditional oil-anointing ceremonies organised at temples in their respective towns.

The state oil-anointing ceremony for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year will be held on the April 17 at 7.40 am, at the Sri Subodhirajaramaya in Bombuwala, Kalutara. The ceremony will be held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe; and Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne.

The North-western Province Ayurveda Affairs Department has made arrangements to provide the necessary herbs and oils free of charge to the incumbents of temples in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts for oil-anointing ceremonies, Senior Kurunegala Divisional Secretary W.E. Jayathilake told the Daily News, yesterday.
