Nine-member Sri Lanka team for Asian Individual Squash Championships

Gihan Suwaris and Fathoum Issadeen will lead the eight-member Sri Lanka team to the 20th Asian Individual Squash Championship which began on May 1 and will continue till May 5 at Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

Seventy-eight players from 14 regions are playing in this tournament namely Sri Lanka, ChineseTaipei, Hong Kong, China, India, Iran Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar and Thailand.

Most experienced player Suwaris will lead the men’s team. The former Thomian player who is the son of former national player and coach Janaka Suwaris has represented his country in the World championships, Asian championships and South Asian championships. The other men’s team members are Mohamed Hakeem, Mohamed Ushama and 18 year old Durvinka Perera from Royal College.

Sri Lanka women’s top seed Fathoum Issadeen who represented her country at the last Asian Games in Jakarta and member of the bronze medal South Asian team will lead the women’s side. She is expected to improve her ranking with good performances in this tournament. The former Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya student won several domestic tournaments recently and is the most experienced member of the women’s team.

Naduni Gunawardena is another experienced player of the team with a lot of international experience. The former Vishaka College skipper Naduni earlier represented the Sri Lanka squash team at the 16th, 17th and 18th Asian team Squash championships and 17th Asian Individual Squash championship which were held in Kuwait, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei and Pakistan respectively from 2012-2016.

Two Visakians Yehani Kuruppu and Anargi Perera are the other members of the women’s team. Anargi the 13 year old player is the youngest member of the team and will be representing her country for the first time in the senior team.
