Organic fertiliser needs quality monitoring: Minister

Agriculture Minister P. Harrison has instructed the relevant ministry officials to prepare a mechanism to monitor the quality of organic fertiliser.

During a recent meeting held with fertiliser company officials at his ministry, the Agriculture Minister highlighted the importance of monitoring the quality of locally-manufactured organic fertiliser.The minister instructed National Fertiliser Secretariat officials to inform organic fertiliser manufactures to use Eppawala phosphate instead of phosphorous.

Minister Harrison said that that the fertiliser stocks for the Yala season were currently available in stores. He further stressed the importance of finding immediate solutions for the issues prevailing in the stores belonging to Lak Pohora and fertilizer companies.

The minister also told officials that the Plantation Industries Ministry had agreed to use the fertiliser produced by the Eppawala Phosphate Company for state-owned plantations. He stressed the importance of promoting the usage of Eppawala Phosphate Company fertiliser for tea, rubber, and coconut plantations.

The minister also highlighted the importance of increasing the quantity of fertiliser produced by the Eppawala Phosphate Company from 50,000MT to 70,000MT.
