Kandy cricket lovers proud over Kumar’s nomination

Cricket lovers in Kandy were thrilled that one of their own son’s Kumar Sangakkara has been nominated to become the next president of the MCC. It is a well-deserved honor to one of Kandy’s school products. The 41 year old Sangakkara, a former national cricket captain was educated at Trinity College where he learnt the rudiments of the game and blossomed to become a cricketing legend.

Kandy Youth SC to resume cricket

Kandy Youth SC are to resume playing cricket. In the last few years the club has not been in a position where it should be but they are reviving the game to bring it back to its former glory days. The club was founded in 1985 and started playing in Division III tournament conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket. Later they were promoted to Division II. In this division too they gave a good account of themselves and were promoted. The club was formed by a few keen promoters like Malcolm Perera, J.D.Shaw Wilson, H. Marikar, Dr. HB Uduwella and D.H. de Silva.

Bradby Shield postponed

The first leg of the 75th Bradby Shield rugby encounter between Royal and Trinity to be played in Kandy on 11 May, has been postponed due to the prevailing situation in the country. A new date for the match will be decided. The second game is scheduled for May 25 in Colombo. So, this year like in 1971 will it be a one leg series? The first leg chief guest is Byron Fernando who led Trinity in 1982 his opposite number from Royal Hiran Muttiah will be the chief guest for the second leg.

Dead football to be given a wake-up call

Football followers in Kandy are not happy as there has been no organized tournament held here for the last four years. Now plans are afoot to hold a tournament for a trophy in memory of late Dr. C.D.L. Fernando and Bodhi Liyanage. The tournament is to be organized privately with eight invited cubs on a knockout basis. The tournament will take place in a ground to be decided as today there is no football grounds in Kandy. This tournament may take place in Colombo or Kurunegala

Wijewansa a top rugby match commissioner

Kandy’s rugby lovers thank, W.D. Oliver Wijewansa for his great service to sports. A product of Vidyartha College, he received his education from 1960 to 1971.

He was a top cricketer, rugby, hockey player and a smart cadet. As a player and later as a match commissioner for all school rugby games he performed well. He is an ex-co member of the Sri Lanka's Schools Rugby Association from 1992 todate. He was also one time treasurer and Central Province rugby coordinator. He was also an exco member of the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket, Boxing, Chess and Athletics associations and tournament secretary for boxing. He later joined Sri Chandrananda Buddhist College and was their prefect of games.

Roshan pulls out due to mother's illness

Roshan Weeraratne pulled out of the Malaysian rugby tour due to his mother's sickness. As the captain he will be there for next month's tour of Taipei. The Sri Lanka side led by Omalka Gunaratna left on Tuesday, and played their first match on May 2 against Malaysian Barbarians , which they won by 55 points to 14.

The second game is today where they will play the Malaysia national side in a friendly at the Bukit Jalil Stadium at 5.30 p.m. (local time).

Hockey tournament for CP Governor's/Mayor's trophy

Plans are afoot to organize a club hockey tournament called the Central Province Governor's trophy. Eight teams will be invited and it will be a straight quarter-finals that will be followed by the semi-finals and final.

The organizers are hoping to invite the Governor Maithri Gunaratne for the final along with some of the veteran hockey players living in Kandy.

The champion team will receive the Governor's Cup and the runner-up the Mayor's trophy.

Kavisha highest wicket-taker for Trinity

Kavishka Senadeera, 19-years old, who is a off-spin bowler has done well this season. In the recently concluded 2018/19 inter school cricket season, the Trinity College vice captain broke the record for the most number of wickets for a season with 128 wickets.

He went past Rushan Jaleel's record of 126 wickets. In two season he has taken 160 wickets conceding 2290 runs in 31 matches.

Walter’s 15th year as secretary

Walter Ranasinghe a well known sporting figure of Kandy was elected secretary for the fifteenth time at the 73 year old Kandy Public Services Club. Walter a keen follower of sports is all out to keep it alive.

The president elected was D.D. Palihakkara, and Vice Presidents, K. M. A.Tennakoon, Lal Gurusinghe and Upananda Jayasundera, the treasurer is B.G.S. Nishantha and Asst.Secretary, P. Manamperi.

Kandy’s Excellence Cricket Academy tour Malaysia

Kandy’s Excellence Cricket Academy which is backed by the Trinity Cricket Foundation made their third overseas tour, this time they took part in the Malaysian International T20 junior cricket tournament organized by the Sports Network Solutions.

It was for Under 12, 14 and 16 teams which took part and the participating teams were from Bangladesh, UAE, Melbourne, Kandy and Malaysia. In the under 12 and 16 category Excellence Cricket Academy teams emerged as runners-up, both the finals were rain interrupted and the winners were picked from the league round matches, run rate. In the under 16 Sweath Anurajeeva and in the under 14 Ayodhya Udurawana of Excellence Cricket Academy won the best bowlers’ prize.

OTS wins at cricket

According to Lakmal Tennakoon the Old Trinitians SC president, their cricket team did well to beat Morton Cricket Club from Brisbane in a friendly T20 game played at Asgiriya last Sunday.

OTSC taking first turn scored 176 in 19.4 overs with Ishan Ratnayake scoring 49, Hasintha Jayasuriya 71 and B. Collins taking four wickets. The visiting team made 139 for 9 in 20 overs with N. Lunt 35, R. Enetriken 22, J. Cross 25 and two wickets each taken by H. Jayasuriya, S. Wasalathaniri, and M. Shabry.

John Tarbat junior athletics

The Sir John Tarbat junior Central Province event will take place on June 6 and 7 at the Provincial Council grounds Digana. The cream of Central Province athletes will be seen in action.
