Our faith unites us, we call him God, you call him Allah - Cardinal

Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith who visited Poruthota in Negombo yesterday morning, in the aftermath of a tense situation that resulted in clashes on Sunday called on Catholics to not raise hands on Muslim brothers and that they should preserve and protect brotherhood among the two communities.

Speaking at a ceremony at the mosque in the presence of All Ceylon Jammatul Ulema President Rizwie Mufti, representatives of the Tri-Forces and Deputy Inspector General of Police for Western Province North Deshabandu Tennakoon, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said that the incidents which took place at the three churches on Easter Sunday was not the work of Muslims, since Islam is a religion of peace.

“We are not against Islam. We have nothing against Muslims. I have personally studied Islam and I know that 76 verses are not for war in the worldly sense but in the spiritual sense to drive away Satan as you would do so in the next forty days when you fast,” he said.

“What happened at the Katuwapitiya church, Kochikade and Batticaloa churches are not the work of a Muslim, it’s the work a few individuals. Muslims should not be held responsible for it.”

He called on Christians to not trouble the Muslims, who are peacefully going about their livelihood.

“Do not break their mosques, shops, that is unbecoming of us as Christians,” he said.

“I urge all Catholics not to raise hands against our Muslim brothers. We are all brothers. We are all children of Abraham. Our faith should unite us. We call our God, God, and you call him Allah,” Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said.
