Offenders encouraging breeding sites ‘will be named publicly’

Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe said this year’s dengue statistics are a matter of concern. There were 23 dengue deaths and over 15,000 cases of the infection this year.

Speaking at a press conference at the Health Promotion Bureau in Colombo yesterday, he said the Health Ministry will take stern action against all those who do not ensure their premises are free of mosquito breeding sites.

Dr. Jasinghe said to arrest the dengue menace, the Health Ministry will announce the names of the institutions with mosquito breeding sites, to the public through the media. Then the entire country will get to know who is breeding mosquitoes which in turn spread dengue.

The Health Ministry will also temporarily suspend construction sites in future if it is found that the sites have become a breeding grounds for the dengue mosquito. Now all construction sites can buy officially approved and recommended insecticides to control mosquitoes, he said.

Steps will be taken in future to name all schools which are not free of mosquito breeding sites. All construction sites need to prevent mosquito breeding and display a banner with the slogan, ‘This is a construction site free of mosquito breeding’. But it should not be something like transporting beef or cattle under the banner of Budu Saranai.

Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni said now a special clause on dengue prevention has been included in the application which is required to be forwarded to the CMC to obtain approval to construct a building.
