‘Batticaloa Campus’ not requested permissions to conduct courses: UGC

The University Grants Commission yesterday stated that no organisation called the ‘Sharia University’ or the ‘Batticaloa Campus’ had ever requested permission to conduct degrees courses.

Issuing a media statement, the UGC said, “The attention of the University Grants Commission is drawn to several news items regarding an organisation referred to as the Sharia University or Batticaloa Campus located in Poonani, in the Eastern Province”. “The Commission wishes to state that, as per the University Act of 1978 (as amended), the University Grants Commission is mandated only to plan and coordinate University education and regulate administration of 15 state universities that come under the purview of the University Grants commission”, the statement read.

It read, “The University Grants Commission categorically states that no organisation by the name of Sharia University or the Batticaloa Campus has ever requested permission, nor given authority by the Commission, to conduct degrees”.
