‘Terrorist attacks devastated Sigiriya tourism’

Central Cultural Fund (CCF) Sigiriya Project Manager Retired Major Anura Nishantha said that the Easter Sunday suicide attacks had devastated the tourism industry in Sigiriya.

“Every day, around 1,500 to 2,000 foreign tourists visit Sigiriya. But on May 3, there were only 80 foreign tourists,” he said.

“Nearly 2,000 local tourists visit Sigiriya every day. But on that day, that number had dwindled to 50. A large number of persons in the tourism industry have become helpless,” he said, “hoteliers say they are unable to run their businesses as there are no tourists.”

Those who were engaged in bullock cart and elephant safaris have also lost their income, Nishantha added.

He said that the police and the Air Force have been deployed to provide security to these areas.
