Police raid safe house used by Zahran

Police had raided a safe house in Nuwara Eliya yesterday, where the National Thowheed Jamath terrorist group responsible for the Easter Sunday bombings are believed to have stayed, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

He said that the group including Zahran is believed to have stayed there for several days.

The owner of this lodge used as a safehouse by the terrorist group had been summoned to the Police station to record a statement.

“Meanwhile, based on information revealed to the CID by a suspect who had been arrested earlier, the Valachchenai Police, CID and STF personnel had raided a land in Valachchanai and recovered a stock of explosives materials,” SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

He told the Daily News that the 25 acre land located in the Valachchenai Police area had belonged to the terrorist group.

“Based on information revealed to the CID by the suspect in their custody, the team had recovered 231 gelignite sticks, several barrels of chemicals and a motorcycle, including several other items,” the Police Spokesman said.
