Former TNA MP sentenced to four years imprisonment

Former Digamadulla District TNA Parliamentarian Podiappuhamy Piyasena who was found guilty for misusing a vehicle belonging to the Prime Minister’s Office was yesterday sentenced to four-years imprisonment by the Colombo High Court.

High Court Judge Gihan Kulatunga further ordered the former MP to pay a fine Rs.5.4 million over an offence filed under Public Property Act.

On July 29, 2016 the former MP was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) over the allegation that he failed to return the concerned vehicle (Jeep) to the Prime Minister’s Office following his defeat in the 2015 (August) General Election.

On February 4, 2015, the Prime Minister’s Office had given this vehicle to the former MP since he was a Parliamentarian representing the Digamadulla District.

The Attorney General had filed indictments against the accused under Public Property Act.
