Refrain from holding large scale Vesak celebrations - Mahanayake Theras

The Mahanayake Theras of the four Chapters yesterday issuing a joint statement urged the people to refrain from holding large scale Vesak celebrations where large crowds gather, in view of the security situation prevailing in the country.

The Mahanayake Theras also requested people to focus on and engage in more religious programmes aimed at spiritual development especially healing the minds of the people affected by the Easter Sunday attacks.

The statement had been signed by Mahanayakes Most Ven. Thibbatuwave Sri Siththartha Sumangala Thera of Malwatte Chapter, Most Ven. Warakagoda Gnanarathana Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter, Most Ven. Kotugoda Dammawasa Thera of the Amarapura Nikaya and Most Ven. Napana Premasiri Thera of the Ramanna Maha Nikaya. They said Vesak was a thrice blessed event that marked the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing Away of Lord Buddha. That Buddhism advocates Peace and Non- Violence as its universal and core message, is only too well known. The spirit of tolerance and understanding has been one of the most cherished ideals of Buddhist culture and civilization over centuries.

The Mahanayake Theras said this year’s Vesak festival should be celebrated in a manner that would eliminate fear triggered by the ruthless terrorist attacks on Easter Sunday. They said it is the responsibility and duty of the authorities to take appropriate steps to ensure security at Buddhist places of worship and for the people.

They also urged Buddhists to organise their religious activities and programmes under the instructions of the security authorities.
