Women in Logistics and Transport Sri Lanka (WiLAT Sri Lanka) celebrated their sixth anniversary and International Women’s Day (IWD) 2019 on March 25 at Hatch, Colombo.

International Women’s Day is set apart by United Nations to celebrate women for their contribution in every facet; from political to social; it is a unified effort calling for gender parity in all spheres.

Welcoming the attendees Chairperson of WiLAT SL Dhashma Karunaratne shared that diversity is a necessity and said, “Change is indeed happening; Corporates are beginning to see the sustainable results diversity brings to fruition.” And further added “Change Agents have realized that Empowering women is not just a moral imperative. It’s also good economics.”

WiLAT Sri Lanka founding Chairperson, WiLAT Global Vice- Chairperson South Asia and CILT Chairperson Gayani de Alwis shared that WiLAT Sri Lanka continues to impact the Logistics and Transport industry of Sri Lanka. The increasing membership numbers is a testament to the commitment and passion of the dynamic ex-co members of WILAT. WiLAT SL’s initiatives such as Ignite – Mentoring Program and HeForShe Partnership have been adopted by WiLAT chapters across the globe and have resulted in a significant shift.

Managing Partner for McKinsey Sri Lanka and Co-leader of McKinsey’s Asia Transaction Banking Service Line Ganaka Herath, the Key Note speaker addressed the audience on advancing gender equality in Sri Lanka, and shared initaitves carried out by global companies to promote gender equality, and showcased how these practical steps can be adopted in Sri Lanka, especially in the Logistics and transport industry which still remains a male dominated industry.

This was further elaborated by the eminent panel, moderated by Shehara De Silva, Partnership Director for You Lead. Varuni Amunugama Fernando, Co-Founder and Joint Managing Director of Triad (Pvt) ltd, Linda Speldewinde, Founder and Chairperson, Design Corp SL and Ishan Gunathilake Chief Operating Officer, Spectra Logistics (Pvt) Ltd shared strategies formulated and adopted by these organisations to ensure women empowerment and equal representation at work places.

Keeping to its usual unique and creative digital marketing engagements, WiLAT carried an impactful social media campaign, as a lead up to the event, engaging friends of WiLAT through a poster campaign.

Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT) Sri Lanka is the Women’s Forum of Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Sri Lanka; dedicated to promote and empower women in Logistics and Transport.
