Ravi inspects school, commends security arrangements

The security arrangements provided in schools is extremely satisfactory and as such, we should create confidence among parents and schoolchildren about this crucial factor, Power, Energy and Business Development Minister Ravi Karunanayake said.

The Minister was speaking during an inspection tour of several Colombo schools including Royal College and St. Paul’s Vidyalaya yesterday to check security arrangements.

“As children are our greatest asset, the doubt in parents’ minds regarding their children’s security was fair and justifiable. We should act in a responsible manner to avoid any doubt in the minds of children, as the security provided in schools was most commendable. Therefore, what needs to be done was to create faith and confidence in the minds of children and their parents about the security position in schools,” Minister Karunanayake said.

The Minister who observed a 15 percent increase in schools attendance over that of the previous day said the Primary section classes were due to begin on May 13.

“People should act according to the security situation rather than the political situation in the country.”

“If the government and the Security Forces and Police decided that the security situation had returned to normal to open schools, we should accept that decision,” he said.

But they could not make that decision regarding tuition classes. “If parents feared to send children to school, how can they send them for tuition classes?” he asked.
