Increase in student turnout at schools

The student turnout at schools islandwide increased yesterday when compared to Monday, education authorities said.

The second school term started on Monday with a low student turnout in most areas.

Only classes from year 06 - 13 started on Monday amidst tight security following the Easter Sunday bombings.

While student attendance in rural area schools increased significantly compared to Monday, the attendance of students in most schools in major cities remained low.

Extensive security measures by the Police and Security Forces were in place with a majority of school authorities expressing their satisfaction over the measures to secure schools.

The Royal College authorities when inquired said the student turnout increased compared to Monday but still remained very low with only 369 students coming to School.

In the Southern Province the attendance of students which was around 1% on Monday increased to over 10% yesterday.
