Horowpothana OIC alerts Bribery sleuths of offer

Horowpothana OIC, Inspector P. P. S. R. Sanjeewa yesterday alerted the Bribery sleuths to nab a suspect who tried to bribe him to get a member of the Thowheed Jamaath released from remand custody.

The suspect Mohamed Thifan (26) of Mukkarawewa, Horowpothana had earlier approached Inspector Sanjeewa on May 7 and stated that his brother-in-law who is a principal

of an Arabic school and a Moulavi is now in remand custody after being arrested by security forces for allegedly being a hardcore member of the National Thowheed Jammath organisation.

Thifan had said he will pay Rs. 500,000 to Inspector Sanjeewa if he intervenes and to get his brother-in-law released.

Inspector Sanjeewa while pretending to accept the offer had told Thifan to give him an advance of Rs. 250,000 the next day and alerted Bribery officials. When Thifan came with the Rs. 250,000 yesterday (May 8) as agreed and offered the money to Inspector Sanjeewa, Bribery sleuths who were in hiding nabbed him with the money.

The man was due to be produced before the Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate yesterday.

Thifan’s brother-in-law who is a Moulavi named Niyas was arrested by the Horowpothana police on April 25 with 36 compact software containing Thowheed Jamaath organisation lectures found buried in the land belonging to his mosque. He was remanded till May 14 after being produced before the Kebettigollawa Magistrate’s Court.
