Old boy’s rugby to make a comeback

The Kandy rugby carnival featuring old boys teams Antonians, Kingswoodians, Rajans, Trinitians and Vidyarthians is to be revived shortly. The first carnival held from July 28 to August 1, 1986 went on for nearly four years and the winners were presented with the Harris Ratwatte challenge trophy. This carnival was mooted by C.H. Seneviratne and H Marikar in an attempt to infuse greater enthusiasm into the game of rugby among the school leavers in Kandy. Rest of the people who gave a hand to make it a success were people like H.M. Halimdeen, Dr. C.D.L. Fernando, Joe Madawella, Deva Amunugama, Rohan Silva, Dudley Gunatilake, Alex Lazarus, Kumar Meeriyagalle and Upali Senanayke.

Trinity 1969 batch Bradby dinner not held

The 1969 Trinity rugby batch who were to celebrate a fellowship dinner on Friday May 10, the day before the first leg of the Bradby was called off according to the chief organizer Iswan Omar. In 1969 Trinity were led by Shafie Jainudeen who died on the 15 June 2012, the night before the 1st leg of the 68th Bradby game. Shafie's 1979 team was made up of players like Fredrick Prins, Nihal Marambe, Sam Samarasekera, Romesh Nugawela, Irwin Howie, Tikiri Marambe, Y.S. Ping, Harinda Gunasekera, Mohan Samarakoon, Russel Tennekoon, ASB Madawel, Izwan Omar, RG Panabokke, Cuda Wadugodapitya and Ralph Roberts. The last two named played in the first leg. Both legs were won by Trinity 8-0 in Colombo and 9-3 in Kandy.

Kandy U16 boys and girls champions in Maldives

The Maldives Basketball Association held their 21st inter schools basketball tournament 2019 for Boys and Girls under 12, 14, 16 and 18 in Maldives and an under 16 invitational tournament. Two under 16 teams from Kandy were seen in action-the Kandy invitation boys and girls team. In the final, Kandy boys team beat Maris Stella College Negombo by 52 points to 46 in a close game. The Negombo boys were unbeaten till the finals having beaten Kandy in the first round. In the Girls final Kandy team beat Kalalaafanu of Maldives by 67 points to 56. Kandy’s boys and girls team were well guided by Anuradha Wijesinghe. In the invitational under 16 girls event Malindu Lokumarabage was adjudged the all star player. The participants in the boys and girls teams were Malindu Lokumarabage, Ammar Amanulla, Pramitha Rupasinghe, Royston Fernando, Mohamed Salim, Krethikeshni Kirubakaran, Fazeel Aamina, Sanjana Kathirvel, Ganeth Amadoru.

Good news for Kandy rugby fans

There is good news in the air that the inter schools Cup, Plate and Bowl rugby matches are to be kicked off from June 1, with the fullest backing coming from the Ministry of Education, as well as the Ministry of Defence. The most looked forward to second round matches were postponed after the Easter Sunday attacks on April 21. Kandy school matches will be played at the Provincial Council grounds at Digana. The schools knockouts are expected to be held from June 6 to 21 if everything goes to plan. The under 19 sevens tournament will only be played after the GCE Advanced Level examinations.

Bradby Shield on May 25 and June 1?

Trinity College and Royal College have held discussions and have tentatively decided to play the 75th Bradby Shield on May 25 first leg in Kandy and the second leg in Colombo on June 1. The two games were to be played on May 11 and 25 but had to be postponed due to the Easter Sunday attacks. After the Bradby Shield was introduced in 1945 it was interrupted only once in 1971 when only one game was played due to the JVP insurgency. That year Fred Pereira’s Royalist beat Trinity 22-3. The then principal of Trinity College late E.L. Fernando carried the shield to Reid Avenue and awarded it to the Royal captain at the morning assembly.

MJM Lafir cue tournament in Kandy

Plans are afoot in Kandy by some cue sports lovers to play an invitation tournament in memory of the first World Cup champion of the country M.J.M. Lafir who won the world billiards title in 1973. The first tournament is expected to be cued off in June. The problem over here in Kandy is there is no proper venue to hold the tournament. Only Mahunuwara YMBA plays the game while Kandy YMMA has forgotten it for years.

P. Thangavelu hockey

A 7-a-side hockey tournament is to be held in the name of the oldest living hockey promoter of Kandy P. Thangavelu, the man who gave a big hand for the game as a player, coach and administrator. He played for St. Anthony’s College and later for Kandy and was the secretary and committee member of Kandy District Hockey Association.

It was Thangavelu who improved hockey at St. Sylvester’s College and was also a fine umpire.

The winners and the runner-up teams will be presented with a trophy and cash award. Further details can be obtained from Malcolm Perera.

Nadeesh 7th at Asian Karate

Two of Trinity College’s karatekas Nadeesh Illukumbure and Osanda Bandara, represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Karate Championship held in Sabah, Malaysia last month. This was the 18th edition of this event, organized by the Asian Karate Federation (AKF). Illukumbure is ranked 7th among the Asian players.

Trinity swimmers at Junior National Short Course

Trinity College swimmers who took part in the Junior National Short Course Swimming Championship last month at the Isipathana College swimming pool did well with Thisura Karunatilake being placed 3rd in the 50m breast stroke and Avon Dikdeniya also taking third place in the 200m breast stroke.
